Think health span. Not life span.

Aging is not optional.

Healthy aging is.

It is a choice that YOU make.

Brilliant minds have done much to extend the life span. But nothing to extend the health span. Where once infectious disease was the biggest human threat, now it is chronic disease. A much slower and lingering path to demise – and one that can make aging a multi-decade misery.

About half of all Australians have a chronic disease, and around 20% have at least two, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). This statistic refers to eight chronic diseases: arthritis, asthma, back problems, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mental health conditions.

When two or more diseases occur at the same time, it is referred to as ‘comorbidity’. Ageing is a factor that has a particularly strong association with comorbidity. Nearly 40% of Australians aged 45 and over have two or more of the eight chronic diseases.

That’s a lot of disease. And a lot of pharmaceuticals are being dispensed to “treat” these diseases.

How do we not become one of the 40%? Or if we are, how do we leave the team?

What is the opposite of disease? Is it health? Sort of. Health is not just the absence of disease.

Health can be defined as physical and mental soundness that is resilient and the result of deliberate effort. To be healthy, is to flourish physically and mentally and to be free of self-created disease.

These definitions reflect the role that we play in our own health and, therefore, our own healthy aging.

The “health” system (GP’s, Hospitals, Specialists etc) exist to treat accidents and disease. But not to create health. There is a very big difference. Only one person can create health for you. Deliberate effort is doing the things that YOU will do to ensure that your life is not only long, but is enjoyable, productive, fulfilling and satisfying. Deliberate effort ensures that you enjoy a high quality of life.

We can work to be free of disease. Or we can work a bit harder to be healthy.

Sometimes, things happen beyond our control and we get sick. But we can broaden that field of control so we get sick less and so that we give ourselves a fighting chance at not becoming a chronic disease statistic.

Health begins and ends right down at the cellular level in your body. In subsequent posts, we will be exploring this in more detail.

However, there are things that you can do right now and every day to create health. In our programs, we work with our clients on their health factors – the things that contribute to health and can be influenced by every human being with the will to do so.

These factors include nutrition, sleep, toxic load, exercise, gut health, stress and mindset. With every decision we make every day, we are either regenerating ourselves into strong healthy human beings or we are sliding down the slippery slope of chronic disease.

Do YOU want a long life? Or a healthy life? Or both.

Dont just add years to life. Add life to those years!!
